Donato Poveda
Donato Poveda, (or as he is simply known, Donato) is an Internationally
known Latin artist whose talent as both singer and songwriter
is unsurpassed by any current artist in mainstream Latin music.
As a disciple of the "Nueva Trova" (The New Troubadours)
movement in Cuba, Donato through his own achieving established
himself as a forerunner of the "New Cuban Sound". After
moving to the U.S. in the late 1980's, Donato teamed up with
Colombian musician / songwriter "Estefano", to create
the Duo "Donato & Estefano". They released three
very successful albums under the Sony label. However after the
third album the duo parted amicably to pursue solo careers.
Donato continued writing hits not just
for himself but for other artists as well. Artist's such as
Julio Iglesias (Agua Dulce , Agua Sala), Chayanne (Candela),
Alexandre Pires ( Usted Se Me Llevo La Vida), Cristian (El
Deseo de Oir Tu Voz), and Gilbert Santa Rosa (Dejate Querer)
are among some of the artists who have sung and recorded Donatos'
poetic lyrics and taken them to the top of the charts. "I have a lot of respect for these
artists, but I also want to reveal more about the person who
wrote these hits," explains Donato, who will also keep covering
and recording hits from his back catalogue in future album releases.
Nevertheless, his solo career won't keep Donato from writing
and producing for Chart Topping artists.
In 2003, Donato was nominated for a "Grammy" in the "Best
Latin Pop Album" category, for "Bohemio Enamorado," his
solo debut album under record label, BMG U.S. Latin. Donato has
also been the recipient of numerous awards including several
ASCAP Awards for his Chart Topping Songs. Donatos' talent, music, & presence
while he sings a Cuban Son, to the strumming of his Cuban Tres
Guitar, is everything that an audience of Latin / World Music
is seeking to hear and experience.
Donatos' music is an adventure through time and a searching
of the Soul. Donato currently lives in Miami with his wife, Carolina
and their four daughters. Apart from being a devoted musician,
husband and father, he is also a fervent Buddhist practitioner
and scholar. As a dedicated Buddhist who selflessly helps those
in need in Tibet, Donato and his wife lead a project to provide
shelter for monk refugees; they have already built a two-story
monastery in Katmandu. They also took under their wing two poor
children from India and placed them in Nepal, where they are
provided with food, shelter and education.
