From the moment Fulanito first leaped onto the music scene as one of the premier architects in the fusion of urban pop and Latin tropical rhythm, each of their releases has been without exception a success in sales and has met favorable expectations of their fanfare.

Combined sales of Fulanito's first three albums have earned the group Gold and Platinum merits in the U.S. and international markets, Fulanito once again demonstrates a working formula that shines through in their new album release "La Verdad (The Truth)."

"Trai la Bulla" starts the album off with a bang; followed by "Todavía," "Diantre," "Mala Mala," "Bump and Rub." With the dual release of "Suave" the first music video release, along with "Pégate" the first radio release single from the album, each song gives the new album release a sense of streetwise lyrics and edgy musical development.

The album also includes favorites such as "La Verdad" (which is taken from the album of the same name), an updated version of a song originally performed by legendary merenguero Johnny Ventura. In addition, the new album include productions from music producer Norty Cotto and Rafael "Dose" Vargas titled "Feliz Cumpleaños" and "Gozando Vivire" which incorporates a segment of "El Preso" as performed by its original recording artist Fruko y Sus Tesos. Finally, the album tapers off with "Reguero De Mujeres," an impacting tune produced by Dose and Ricardo Gutiérrez.

Other composers and producers included in "La Verdad" are veterans of the Latin Hip-Hop genre. Winston de Jesús, D.J. Nelson, Andrés de Jesús, and Winston Rosa, round up the production team and skills that put a mark on an album that continues to define Fulanito's unique style.

Fulanito has garnered dozens of awards, nationally and internationally, such as Latin ACE (Association of Entertainment Critics of New York) and Casandra Awards (a music awards show televised in the Dominican Republic and throughout Latin America countries). The group has also received honorable nominations from the Grammy, Premio Lo Nuestro (televised by Univision Network) and Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Recognition, influence, popularity, and extensive tours, the group has opened up markets in countries that are not traditionally open to tropical music such as Spain, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Japan, Bolivia; while breaking new grounds in already existing markets such as Chile, Venezuela, Colombia, and Mexico.
Popular hits like "Guallando," "La Novela," and "El Cepillo", have made Fulanito a household name. Some of their highlights have included the following chronological events: special guest performance at the Miss Colombia/Universe 1998 beauty pageant in Cartagena, Colombia. The following year, the group performed in Venezuela's "Beauty Gala (Gala de la Bellezas)," a pre-competition show for the Miss Venezuela/Universe 1999 title representative, hosted by Latin TV personality Viviana Gibelli. Fulanito have been exposed to legions of adoring fans that identify their energetic presence and talent.

In June 1999, Fulanito performed at the ballroom wedding reception of actress Natalia Streignard and actor Mario Cimarro (both former telenovela stars of "La Mujer De Mi Vida") in Caracas, Venezuela. In 2000, the group performed at one of the most prestigious international festivals in Latin American, VINA DEL MAR, in Chile.

Even television and film industry has taken notice of this exciting group. Fulanito's "Serenata Negra" appears on the soundtrack to the updated film version of "Shaft" by director John Singleton starring Samuel L. Jackson and Vanessa Williams. The successful Colombian TV soap opera "Betty La Fea" viewed by millions throughout the United States and Latin America countries has included some of Fulanito's music in several of their scenes. Latin TV commercials such as Heineken Beer, Chevrolet's "American Revolution" campaign, and most recently T-Mobile USA have aired jingles using their music.

Among their other credits to take into account is the memorable performance at the Coca-Cola Concert Series/Memorial Jam '98 in Madison Square Garden, New York City that also starred Gilberto Santa Rosa, Olga Tanon, Victor Manuelle, Oro Solido, and Tony Vega. During the same year the grouping was selected to perform at the First Latin Benefit Gala in 1998 supported by MusiCares & The NARAS Foundation at the Recording Academy New York Chapter. Fulanito was selected by People En Espanol magazine's year-end issue of "Lo Mejor Del Año (Best of the Year 2000) for their distinguished accomplishments in the music industry.

Who are the key figures of Fulanito? Many have seen the group on some of TV's most popular watched shows such as "Sábado Gigante," "Súper Sábado Sensacional" with Daniel Sarcos, "Don Francisco Presenta," "Primer Impacto," "Fuzion," "Despierta América", "Caliente" y "Cotorreando," just to mention a few. In print, they've been featured in the New York Daily News, Billboard, People En Espanol, Urban Latino Magazine, Mira, TeleRevista, and Columbia House: Club Musica Latina. Musically, they have appeared and collaborated with artist like Bacilos, Nueva Era, and La Mafia.

The group's lead vocalist and musical director, Rafael Vargas (a.k.a. Dose) is the first one to acknowledge his lucky break. In 1997, Dose approached two main record executives of Cutting Records, Amado and Aldo Marin, who were enthusiastic from the first moment they heard a demo recording of the dynamic young group of Dominican origin. As a consequence of this encounter, the name Fulanito was born, a slang term used in Latin American countries to describe an "unknown anybody."

Fulanito group member, Jose Fuentes (a.k.a. Pickles), does not hide his enthusiasm either when speaking about the rhythmic fusion that characterizes the group. The acceptance we have received from the beginning was favorable," he continues, "and the public was enchanted with the New York touch that we gave to the Dominican music, as well as rhythms from different countries, including cumbia and reggae." The other two members of the group - Danny Fernández and Jay Martínez - are very excited and recognize the significance of forming part of Fulanito.

For Fulanito their new album represents a new stage. For the lovers of tropical music, this represents a new groove that listeners will experience and enjoy the twelve tracks that make up "La Verdad (The Truth)," perhaps one the most distinctive albums ever presented by Fulanito.

 

FULANITO, SIGUE SIENDO NÚMERO UNO

Desde que Fulanito saltó a la fama como la agrupación número uno de los ritmos de fusión tropical y callejera, cada uno de sus nuevos lanzamientos ha sido sin excepción un acontecimiento de nota - tanto en ventas como en favor del público.

Ahora, tras grandes éxitos discográficos como "El Hombre Más Famoso," "El Padrino" y "Americanizao," ganadores de varios Discos de Platino y de Oro, Fulanito vuelve a mostrarnos que de hecho ha patentizado una fórmula infalible, ya que en la docena de números que integran "La Verdad," su flamante álbum para el sello Cutting Records, no hay nada de desperdicio.

Empezando por "Trai la Bulla," que inicia en nota alta y festiva el programa musical de "La Verdad," los

números que siguen no bajan en ningún momento la cadencia melódica. Por el contrario, celebran la experiencia callejera en números como "Todavía," "Diantre," "Mala Mala" y "Bump and Rub," al igual que "Suave," base del primer video del álbum, y "Pégate," que también será un lanzamiento tropical sencillo.

Pero a nivel de novedad especial, de seguro serán favoritos el tema titular, acreditado al legendario Johnny Ventura, así como también "Feliz Cumpleaños," de Norty Cotto y Rafael Vargas; "Gozando Viviré," que incorpora un segmento de "El Preso," en la interpretación de Fruko y sus Tesos; y por supuesto, "Reguero de Mujeres," un tema de impacto que fue creación de Vargas conjuntamente con
Ricardo Gutiérrez.

Los otros compositores incluídos en "La Verdad" son todos veteranos de la fraternidad de Fulanito - Winston de Jesús, D.J. Nelson, Andrés de Jesús, y Winston Rosa - y quizás por eso ponen de evidencia una admirable cohesión que además de definir un insólito estilo interpretativo, conforman una imagen sonora que hace distinto a Fulanito de los demás grupos musicales que han surgido en los últimos años.

Pero en juego con el título del nuevo discoálbum para el bien acreditado sello Cutting Records, sin apartarnos de "La Verdad," el grupo ha acaparado más de una docena de premios internacionales - tan importantes como el Latin ACE Award y el Casandra, aparte de haber recibido honrosas nominaciones para los premios Grammy, Lo Nuestro y Billboard.

Todos esos reconocimientos están avalados por constantes giras internacionales, que han hecho de los intérpretes de "Guallando" y "El Cepillo" una agrupación de embajadores musicales del Nueva York latino, y por ende de la Capital del Mundo, como cuando en 1998 Fulanito fue atracción estelar del certamen para elegir Miss Colombia, en Cartagena, del afamado concurso Miss Universo; el año
siguiente participó en la "Gala de Belleza" conducida por la animadora de televisión Viviana Gibelli para elegir Miss Venezuela; en 1999 fue la agrupación musical invitada para amenizar la boda en Venezuela de Mario Cimarro y Natalia Streignard, la estelar pareja de la telenovela "La Mujer de Mi Vida"; en 2000 hicieron sensación como atracción del afamado Festival de Viña del Mar, en Chile; y posteriormente se anotaron un diez en Colombia al proveer gran parte de la música de la telenovela "Betty La Fea," vista por millones en las principales plazas hispanas de Estados Unidos y la América Latina.

Entre otros créditos hay que tomar en cuenta la memorable actuación de Fulanito en la Serie de Conciertos Coca-Cola/Memorial Jam '98, compartiendo cartel en el neoyorquino Madison Square Garden con Gilberto Santa Rosa, OlgaTañón, Víctor Manuelle, Oro Sólido y Tony Vega. Y el mismo año la agrupación fue escogida para amenizar la exitosa Primera Gala Benéfica de la organización NARAS. Cabe también recordar, que 2000 fue un año cumbre para Fulanito, ya que la revista
People en Español distinguió al grupo entre "Lo Mejor del Año," a la vez que hizo su aporte musical a una nueva versión fílmica de "Shaft," dirigida por John Singleton y con un elenco encabezado por Samuel L. Jackson y Vanessa Williams.

Ahora bien, ¿quiénes son las figuras claves de Fulanito, que musicalmente han cambiado la fisonomía musical latinoamericana? Los que han visto al formidable grupo en los programas más gustados de la televisión hispana - como "Sábado Gigante," "Súper Sábado Sensacional" con Daniel Sarcos; "Don Francisco Presenta," "Primer Impacto," "Edición Especial," "Despierta América"; "Caliente" y "Cotorreando," para mencionar sólo algunos - desde el primer momento se identifican con este grupo que desborda energía y talento, a pesar de que su vestimenta y sombreros insinúan pintorescos personajes del hampa de antaño.

El Fulanito Mayor y director del grupo, Rafael Vargas, es el primero en reconocer que para él fue un golpe de suerte, en 1997, haberse acercado a dos altos ejecutivos de Cutting Records Latino - Amado y Aldo Marín - ya que éstos se entusiasmaron desde el primer momento al escuchar una grabación de prueba que les trajo el dinámico joven de origen dominicano. Y casi como por encanto, de este encuentro surgió el nombre de Fulanito, que usan en nuestros países para referirse a alguien indeterminado - es decir, a todo el mundo.

Por su parte, el "Gordito" de Fulanito, José Fuentes, no esconde su entusiasmo cuando habla de la fusión de ritmos que caracteriza a Fulanito. "La aceptación que recibimos desde el principio fue favorable," dice, "y el público se encantó con el toque neoyorquino que le dimos a la música dominicana, al igual que otros ritmos de nuestras tierras, incluyendo cumbia y reggae." Y los otros dos integrantes del frente de la agrupación - Danny Fernández y Jay Martínez - no son menos efusivos cuando expresan lo que significa la experiencia de formar parte de Fulanito.

Pero si para cada uno de ellos es insólita esa experiencia musical, para la legión de amantes de la cadenciosa música tropical y callejera no lo es menos especial, como comprobarán cuando disfruten o bailen los diez temas que contiene "La Verdad," quizás el álbum más emblemático que hasta el momento nos ha brindado Fulanito.
