Jamey and Justin Crisler as

“The Blues Brothers”

When the Crisler Brothers (Jamey and Justin), a.k.a. The Alabama Blues Brothers, claim they’re the only Blues Brothers impersonators in the state and, to their knowledge, the only impersonators nationwide who are actual brothers, its hard to dispute it – especially when it’s said with a stem expression topped with night-black Ray-Bans.

Unlike the characters musicians/actors John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd made famous by the 1980 movie that sets the record for most cars wrecked in one film, the Crislers never spent time behind bars. Justin “Elwood” Crisler, 30, has a degree in criminal justice and performs the blues full time. Jamey “Jake” Crisler, 37, is a Nurse for a Hospital in North Alabama. Once in their Blues Brothers outfits, all that changes.

Jamey had an idea to show-off their look. He bought a 1976 Dodge Coronet from a junkyard, slapped on black-and-white paint to make it look like the movie’s worn police car, and convinced Justin to join him on a visit to the Hard Rock Cafe in Nashville in 1998.

“We were just going to walk in and see what kind of reaction we’d get, just for fun,” Jamey said. “The manager ran to the back, threw on ‘Soul Man,’ and announced that the Blues Brothers were there. Next thing we know, we’re standing on top of the tables dancing to it. The place went wild.”
Then, in Courtland, where Jamey lived, they entered the town’s Christmas parade. This had no holiday ring to it, but after all, who could turn down two big guys in dark suits and sunglasses?

They practiced some moves by watching the movie and old episodes of “Saturday Night Live” in which the musicians appeared, put together a sound system with backup tracks of Blues Brothers’ tunes, and printed some business cards in black-and-white.

“One venue would lead to two or three others,” Jamey said. Now The Alabama Blues Brothers have performed to over 1600 audiences and have been reviewed as two of the most realistic Blues Brother Impersonators in The Nation.

Where did all this showmanship spring from? Justin was involved in theater and band in high school and Jamey sang in Church choir. That’s it. “The odd thing was we were both raised real conservative and had never done anything edgy, just straight down the road kind of guys,” Jamey said. “This was a new kind of thing.”

Dressed in their suits, the brothers do the same thing as their movie heroes, riding the streets, barking out about their show in shameless self-promotion. For larger shows, the brothers are able to book their six to eight piece band to accompany them. “In 2000 we hooked up with some great musicians and took the show to the next level, we were actually putting the band back together!” Justin said.

Riding in the back seat of the “Bluesmobile,” surrounded by speakers and other sound equipment, staring at the silhouettes of the Crislers is like watching one long extended scene from the movie. Saxophonist Jim Beck said. On the road, he said he sometimes feels he’s experiencing things that might have ended up on the movie’s cutting-room floor.

Jamey has the lead vocals and Justin sings backing vocals while playing the harmonica. Their show staples include “Soul Man,” “Hey, Bartender,” “Jailhouse Rock”, “Give Me Some Lovin” and “Rawhide.” The Alabama Blues Brothers have performed around the Nation and even toured Japan. Some of their clients have included Jeff Cook of The Group Alabama, The United States Army, The United States Navy, Beale St. in Memphis, multiple Corporate events from Florida to Washington, DC, and many festivals including The Big Spring Jam in Huntsville Alabama, The Blue Hill Fair in Maine, Fiesta Mexicana in Topeka Kansas, and Celebrate Bonita in Bonita Springs Florida.

They’ve also performed for fund-raisers including campaigns for the national World War II memorial, American Cancer Society, American Red Cross and the Children’s Miracle Network to name a few. “When we perform, it’s a clean act that all ages can enjoy.” Justin says. Saying that, while wearing the suits and dark sunglasses, you have to believe them.

Chris Boss and The Fuss

Witness their live show and you’ll know exactly why The Fuss has become one of the most in demand and hardest working bands in the area! Performing regionally over 250 dates per year.

Chris and his group The Fuss, travel all over the country including performances in Las Vegas at both The Wynn, Mandalay Bay and Hooters casinos and others. Chris Boss, a very unique Texas artist has shared the stage with many well known groups such artists as KISS, Steve Vai, Merle Haggard, Slash and many, many others. Chris has earned many accolades including winning the “Guitar Wars Competition” three times, a nomination for musician of the year -SA News and many more. He performs the national anthem for various events including a recent “hair raising rendition” for over 18,000 fans at a sold out NBA playoff game, AHL Hockey games, TX A&M football and more.

Influenced by so many greats has critics making comments such as this… “Chris seems to have soaked up like a sponge all of the best characteristics of the masters and seems to wring them out over audiences with his own injection of style and soul.” Recognized in his hometown of San Antonio as a bit of a local celeb, Chris is more than just the “guitar hero” he is often labeled. He is also an accomplished vocalist, gushing with charisma and a passion for entertaining people. Using a variety of stunning renditions of popular music. Listeners seem captivated in a way usually reserved for rock royalty. Backing him is a band of seasoned, world class pros accomplished in their own right, providing the backbone of this unique artist on the rise.

Chris got his start by entering local battle of the band, and guitar competitions at the age of 16. He was recognized with the Best Guitarist Award in his very first public appearance a Battle of the Bands at Sunken Gardens Amphitheater. He was hired shortly after that and became a full time guitar instructor at the age of 18. When he finally decided to jump into the club scene, he made an immediate impact by playing 250 dates a year at top nightclubs, Private and corporate events as well as being the preferred opening act for touring artists all over Texas. Chris Boss- “We really try to involve the audience”. Says Chris. When we hit the stage we make sure that every second on stage counts! Our high energy is very contagious and the audience is always a big part of that.”

BIOGRAPHY

Big Frank Gomez takes it back. Way back. The unsung Austin, Texas blues hero has been a working musician since childhood, when he was taken under wing of one Sergeant Venible, a gentle, Black bluesman who taught him guitar. Hitting his stride roughly 40 years later, he issues his first major solo album and offers advice gleaned from Seinfeld.

“There was one show where he [Seinfeld] said, “If you’re not a genius, surround yourself with geniuses.” And on his latest salvo, he delivers a straight-ahead dose of Texas rhythm & blues laced with a healthy load of Tex-Mex funk & soul that includes guest turns by Ruben Ramos of the Mexican Revolution, Texas Tornados’ Augie Meyers, Los Texmaniacs’ and Producer Max Baca, David Farias of the famed La Tropa F, and five-time Grammy Award-winning accordion maestro Flaco Jimenez. Produced at Blue Cat Studios, Under the Influence, as the record is aptly called, gives newcomers and old fans a pitch-perfect glimpse at a rollicking Texas barnburner bluesman who has finally called in his chips and reunited with his musical brethren on both sides of the radio dial.

Raised on military bases throughout the U.S. and Europe, Frank Gomez and his younger siblings —encouraged by their father who bought them instruments and inspired by an uncle who played sax in the Tejano orchestras of the big band era—built on the adage that a family who plays together, stays together.

Having lived in Austin during high school, the Gomez family eventually made it back to Central Texas in the mid-’70s touring across the country to play in juke joints, bars and army base canteens, Big Frank also absorbed the music that surrounded him at home. “I always loved Tejano,” he says. Hooking up as an occasional sideman with the Ramos clan, perhaps Austin’s most notable Tejano export, Gomez also heard and admired the music of Little Joe y La Familia, Shorty & the Corvettes and Augustin “El Guti” Ramirez. Falling under the influence of the music that was in his bones as deeply as were the blues and soul, he actively sought out Tejano heavy-weights, among them Jay Perez, Freddy Fender, David Lee Garza and the late Randy Garibay, the artist he is most often compared to.

When his brothers retired from music in 1998, about five years after the death of their father, Big Frank continued to play. While he was in consistent demand as a guitar slinger, he was also busy composing. The album is a testament to the length and breadth of his career and his talent as a songwriter. Featuring what has become his signature song, the Bobby Bland hit, “Stormy Monday,” Under the Influence also features six original songs, an Augie Meyers-penned tune called “Hey Sarita” and three covers. Among the latter are the Wilson Pickett hit “Don’t Let the Green Grass Fool Ya” and “Barranquillero,” a traditional cumbia sung by none other than the legendary Ruben Ramos. Tejana sweetheart Stefani Montiel leaves her incomparable mark with background vocals on four of the album’s tracks.

Although Gomez is proud of the company that has joined him on his triumphant solo debut, he is also pleased that he was able to coax his brothers, Joe and Danny Gomez, out of retirement for a guest appearance on the record as well. The album has the smooth consistency of a slow, mellow buzz, the drift of its horns, steel strings and solid bass lines like an aged brandy. Compelling and playful at the same time, Under the Influence is a delicious blend of vintage legends and the edgy, as yet unseen energy emanating from the hollow body electric Gibson 333 guitar Big Frank Gomez lays into time after time.

Still going strong, he admits that when his mother, now a proud cancer survivor, began radiation treatment, he shuttered his successful auto garage while he drove her to and from chemotherapy sessions. As a result, he began playing music again full-time. “In a way, I was lucky. I was forced into doing what I’d always wanted to do when I was young, play music,” he says. “I’m very proud of this record. And I look forward to going on the road behind it.”

In 2008, Tejano music Super Stars, recording artists, Shelly Lares, Leslie Lugo, Stefani Montiel and Patsy Torres created the new dynamic ensemble, LAS VOCES. Each artist individually made an indelible mark on the music scene with a lifetime of experience appearing in local, national and international venues, earning a multitude of top music industry awards and scoring countless chart-topping radio music hits. United in this venture, LAS VOCES captivates the hearts of audiences with their powerful performances of traditional Mariachi music instilling them with the beauty and richness bestowed by the emotional voice of their culture. LAS VOCES spectacular shows are backed up by some of the best, most critically acclaimed Mariachi groups.

An accomplished songwriter, Leslie has written songs for many other artists. In 1997, Leslie was honored with an accolade from the Grammy’s for her songwriter performance in the Grammy Award recording, “Said and Done” by Flaco Jimenez. She also co-wrote a song for Flaco Jimenez for the Woody Allen movie, “Picking Up The Pieces”.

Leslie has enhanced her musical abilities and great versatility as a background vocalist by being part of other artist’s musical productions. Her collaborations with other artists have garnered an amazing four Grammy nominations.
A noted professional voice over performer, Leslie’s dynamic and extraordinary voice can be heard from coast to coast in her impressive list of recorded Radio/Television National/Regional Commercials and jingles for Coca Cola, Time Warner, Chrysler, Dodge, Burger King, Enterprise Rent A Car, as well as many others.

Leslie inherited her love of music from her musical family. Her father, Raul Lugo, a Professional Engineer by trade, is also a classical guitarist. Her mother, Bitsy, and her paternal grandmother would sing at family gatherings. As a baby, Leslie’s first words were sung, not spoken. Instead of the usual “Mama” and “Dada” that most babies utter, Leslie sang “Wild Fire”, the two words of a popular song she had heard on the radio. For her amazed parents, this was the first indication that Leslie loved music. While still a baby, Leslie would carry a carrot the same way one holds a microphone, singing and making up song lyrics as she went along. Leslie’s first steps in her creative life were developed at a very early age. Barely reaching the strings of the guitar as she sang, Leslie, at 5 years old, was already performing for her pre-kindergarten class. During her early years, Leslie was The San Antonio and Texas State Winner of Young American Stars. She was a Trophy Winner at the “Talent Showcase” International Model & Talent Association in New York City where she competed against hundreds of singers from all over the world.

At the tender age of sixteen, Leslie Lugo, was selected as Lead Vocalist for one of the primer orchestras in Texas, The Ramiro Cervera Orchestra, a San Antonio institution with a 17-piece aggregation of music veterans. She performed locally, throughout Texas, as well as in other states on occasion. Shortly after, while still in High School, she joined a popular local band, a Latino beat ensemble led by experienced accomplished musicians. At eighteen years of age and the youngest performer, Leslie represented Texas in the prestigious National OTI (Organizacion de Televisoras Ibero-Americanas) song contest in Miami, Florida. She performed live, via The Univision International TV network, before an estimated 200 million television viewers in 33 countries in the U.S. and Latin America. Leslie was also featured on two telecasts of “Ritmo Internacional”, a TV show via the Hispanic Telemundo Network and broadcast from Walt Disney World Pleasure Island in Orlando, Florida.

By the age of 19, Leslie Lugo struck out on her own, forming her own band and entertaining audiences with a variety of English/Spanish music. ”The Leslie Lugo Band” has performed in numerous festivals, conventions, concerts and special events, such as: The Festival Latino and Noche De Gala Festival in Washington, D.C., National El Presidente Latin Music Songwriting Talent Search in Los Angeles, Calif., The Selena World Premier Movie Gala Celebration in San Antonio, Texas, National Council of La Raza National Convention in Dallas, Texas, The Lulac Foundation Achievement Award Ceremony in Houston, Texas and The George Washington Celebration Noche Mexicana, Colonial Ball and Noche De Cabaret in Laredo, Texas. El Camino To Fame, a bilingual National syndicated TV show that utilized the technologies of the Internet, featured Leslie as Co-Host and was televised from Fiesta Texas Theme Park in San Antonio, Texas.

Leslie’s debut album has taken her musical career on a new journey artistically and personally reflecting a true representation of where Leslie Lugo is today. She wrote or co-wrote four of the songs on her new album adding her own personal creativity and feeling to her music. The CD is a Latin mix of exciting original music with Leslie performing the powerful tracts brilliantly, blending heart and soul with her unique style. Her charisma, drive and marvelous ability to captivate and enchant her audiences over the past few years has brought her to the forefront of the entertainment world as she continues to celebrate great milestones in her illustrious career.

Los Texas Wranglers

Sonny Trujillo (Accordion) Sonny has been in the Tejano/Conjunto music scene for over 40 years. This gentleman is truly one of Austin’s finest and most sought after, musician and a great person to be around. His talent has brought out the best in our conjunto. Sonny is known throughout the U.S. as one of the best accordionist. He is respected as a true icon to the Tejano and Conjuntos in Texas and beyond. He has recorded for many groups. Ruben Ramos has often called on Sonny for many recordings. It is my great honor to have him onboard. Just recently Sonny recorded his 1st original polka and we all voted to name it “Sonny Boy Polka”.

Tim Torres (Sax and vocals) Tim is a true class act. Tim is Austin’s favorite gem, an Austin legend, and a well-known “Big Band” leader. Tim lights up a crowd with his many styles of music. He brings to our conjunto many styles such as Swing, Danzon, Country, and those killer Boleros. It’s a great pleasure and an honor to perform with Tim. With his over 40 years experience in the music business Tim still has that Midas touch. When Tim was 18 he played with the Nash Hernandez Orchestra along side my grandfather Manuel “POPS’ Limon. Tim will always have a special place in our hearts! Thanks Mr. Tim…

Amador Salazar (Bass and vocals) Amador grew up in Edinburg, Texas. He is Austin’s best kept secret-his singing is second to none. Amador brings a classy style of singing and has great stage showmanship. His personality is the same both on and off stage. Amador has been the backbone of the conjunto and I thank him for keeping faith in our project. When Amador smiles at you when he’s singing you feel that sincere warmth, he has that charm and seductive stage presences that I’ve only seen in likes of Elvis, Julio Iglesias, Selena, and George Strait. I hope one day he gets the recognition he deserves.

Marcelo Sanchez (Guitar and vocals) Marcelo, from Alice, Texas, has a true love for music. Marcelo brings that little thing that groups go for years looking for and never find it “Class”. I wasn’t looking for a guitar player for our conjunto, but when I heard him play and sing I had to make room in our Conjunto and rewrite parts to accommodate our newest member. His true Chicano feels for la onda and his love for the old standards (Ol’School) is what put our conjunto over the top. When you hear Marcelo play his guitar you’ll feel like you are in Chicago or New Orleans. He brings that good’ol sound down to Earth. Just “puro bad” es este carnal. Thanks Marcelo for finding us.

Julian L. Fernandez (Drums) I’m a true Austinite by way of Chicago. My job is music director, arranger, composer and business manager. With all the great talent in our Conjunto I am pleased to present our music to the world. It is an honor to have these great musicians. I often get compliments on our performances and selections. I come from a musical family that extends 4 generations. I often run into folks that know my family and the groups we used to play for. I thank you for your continued support and for making Los Texas Wranglers your choice. Our goal is to keep conjunto alive and educate the younger generation on the music our forefathers brought forth to us. “Keeping it Conjunto!”

“Keeping it Conjunto!”

I formed Los Texas Wranglers in October 1999. This is a project that I’m proud of. I wanted a Conjunto that Austin could be proud of and afford to hire. With the backing of great friends, families and local businesses it has been lots of fun. We’re climbing the mountain and so far have overcome the obstacles in our path. I have great musicians and we all have our own history in la onda with some of the great and famous Tejano stars. With that much experience in our Conjunto it has made this project very interesting. We have played in Chicago (3 times within the year) and in Richland and Kennewick, Washington in June 2004. I have been working hard at making this Conjunto known. Not everyone knows us, but the ones that do, keep our Conjunto going and that keeps making us a larger fan base. Los Texas Wranglers main focus is the audience and showing the younger generation how much fun conjunto music can be. National and international businesses have taken a chance with our project and helped us spread conjunto music to their distributors and outlets. With the help Brown Distributing (Bud and Bud-Light), we have performed for grocery store grand openings, played for fiestas, distinguished celebrities and politicians. With the help Wrangler Hats we’ve played for grand openings of new western wear stores in Chicago, Washington State, Austin, Dallas, Garland, San Antonio and Del Rio. It is a great feeling when you have the confidence and trust of companies like these. Recently, Crumrine Gold and Silversmiths in Reno, Nevada have endorsed us and are now another one of our international companies that we have the honor of being onboard. Wrangler Hats provides our cowboy hats, along with other products. Also, cowboy hats to give at our events, like to the best female cumbia dancer or the highest jumping male huapango dancer. We always have fun with our audience. Los Texas Wranglers and Puro Conjunto Records released “Llegaron Los Texas Wranglers” CD it has 14 songs of which 6 are original compositions of Los Texas Wranglers. Our style and image is a clean-cut western cowboy (caballero) type. Our own release “Texas Tradition” CD which has opened our market even more, with songs like; Yellow Rose of Texas, San Antonio Rose, Tennessee Waltz, Cielito Lindo, Ranch Grande and much more traditional Texas songs and original Conjunto songs. Fans have come to appreciate the good old boy Texas sound. We have had success in our selections of music; it’s been keeping us busy. Thank you very much for taking time and giving me this opportunity to introduce Los Texas Wranglers and myself.

Thank you, and “Keep it Conjunto”

Siempre Amigos

Julian Limon Fernandez
